Lean cycle time formula

Hi Carlo, thanks for the compliments.
As for 1) First I that the “unit processing time” does not include losses/waste, otherwise it would be a takt. For the cycle time I would exclude the set up time. In lean there is to my knowledge no need for a cycle time plus proportional set up time. If you want the overall speed, you use a takt. If you want to calculate a target speed of the workers similar to MTM, this would also include other parts like personal breaks.
As for 2), that is a good point, especially if it is NOT a batch process. I would consider the 5 minutes (without losses) a cycle time, and the 2 hours a process time. The question is what do you need the time for. If you want to determine the OEE based on line takt and cycle time, then you would use 5 minutes. Same if you want to determine the number of kanban.

T&D electric manufactures high-voltage switches and other equipment for electric utilities. One line that is staffed by three workers assembles a particular type of switch. Currently the threes workers have fixed assignments; each worker fastens a specific set of components on the switch and passes it downstream on a rolling conveyor. The conveyor has capacity to allow a queue to build up in front of each worker. The bottleneck is the middle station with a rate of 11 switches per hour. The raw processing time is 15 minutes. To improve efficiency of the line, management is considering cross-training the workers and implementing some form of flexible labor system.

@Alvin – That’s a great question. From my own experience with my training clients, I never had one client lose an ounce of muscle while losing fat (well actually one who tried a very low carb diet when he was already lean). This is because they did intense strength training, did not go too low on the calorie deficit, and ate sufficient protein (roughly per pound of body weight). I think if you follow these 3 guidelines, you can keep the vast majority of your muscle mass. As you start getting around 10-12% body fat, it’s very possible that you lose a little muscle mass. So let’s say a bodybuilder looking to get shredded for competition may lose 3-5lb of muscle as he strips his body of all the fat he can.

The lean start-up method is now being taught at more than 25 universities and through a popular online course at . In addition, in almost every city around world, you’ll find organizations like Startup Weekend introducing the lean method to hundreds of prospective entrepreneurs at a time. At such gatherings a roomful of start-up teams can cycle through half a dozen potential product ideas in a matter of hours. Although it sounds incredible to people who haven’t been to one, at these events some businesses are formed on a Friday evening and are generating actual revenue by Sunday afternoon.
